✿ Root Causes
Root Causes & Triggers
Genetics
Highly heritable. Risk increases significantly if a parent or twin has the condition.
Dopamine Hypothesis
Overactivity of dopamine in the mesolimbic pathway causes psychotic symptoms.
Neurodevelopmental Disruptions
Brain development issues during fetal growth or adolescence, sometimes triggered by viral infections or malnutrition during pregnancy.
Islamic Perspective
"The loss of reason does not equal the loss of humanity."
Reflection & Clinical Context
Unlike medieval Europe, which often viewed psychosis as demonic possession, the Islamic world viewed it as a medical condition. Bimaristans (hospitals) in Baghdad and Damascus treated severe psychosis with extreme compassion, using music therapy, soothing water fountains, and beautiful architecture to calm the mind.
