Root Causes

Etiology // Origins

Root Causes & Triggers

The Narcissistic Cycle

Idealization (Love Bombing), Devaluation (Criticism and Withholding), and Discard.

Gaslighting

A manipulation tactic where the abuser denies reality, causing the victim to doubt their own memory and sanity.

Intermittent Reinforcement

Occasional unpredictable rewards (crumbs of affection) that keep the victim addicted to the relationship.

Islamic Perspective

"Arrogance (Kibr) is a delusion where a person views himself with eyes of perfection and others with eyes of contempt."

Abu Hamid al-Ghazali(11th Century (1058–1111 CE))

Reflection & Clinical Context

Al-Ghazali dedicated chapters to the pathology of the ego. He diagnosed narcissism not just as a personality flaw, but as a severe spiritual disease masking deep insecurity. The cure involved active exercises in humility and recognizing one's existential vulnerability.
